Pre-Trip Proposal
This module consists of a project that spans multiple parts throughout the semester. It involves a field study in the city of Tokyo, Japan where our theme was to explore the idea of mythology. But unlike the traditional expectation of mythology which usually features gods, myths, and divinity stories, the lecturers actually expect something relating more to modern cultural development that has its roots in something from the past. Which, to be frank, was more than a little confusing...
Nonetheless, we get into groups of four people(with some exceptions) and begin considering topics. After several sessions of idea tossing, our team initially proposed exploring the deity Inari, and its potential relation to reverence in modern businesses. Alas, the idea was not received well, and since there was such an undeniable, unfaltering, unwavering, unending, unstoppable, inconceivable, unforgiving, and undeterrable amounts of what I can only describe as encouragement for it, we settled on cosplay and its potential underlying implications. Alongside this we also intended to explore if said implications are similar or have any relation to traditional Japanese mask performances.
