Secondary Research (Critical Review)
Lectures
Week 7
This week we were given another rundown on the basics on data collection and analysis though with a emphasis on primary data collection. We were taught the various methods of gathering data from surveys for quantitative data to interviews for qualitative data.
Week 8
This week we were given some extra notes on data collection to aid our research implementation. The first was a more in-depth insight into the nature and theories behind the research methods.
The second set of notes gives us insight on another form of research which is visual analysis. This was a research mode more used by those studying visual related data as the name suggests.

Week 7
After submitting our critical reviews, we were advised to start on our research implementation. By the next week we were to update our respective lecturers on our progress in our respective mediums. For my research specifically, I decided to take a qualitative approach to my research, using interviews and visual analysis. Interviews, so I can get some deeper insight from practitioners. Visual analysis, so that I can examine how mediums in the past has tackled the approach of storytelling in character design evolution.
Week 8
This week, despite the public holiday, we had to update our lectures on our progress and methods. I personally updated Dr. Hayati via Google Drive. I also decided that for my visual analysis I would analyse existing characters from existing media such as games, movies, and animations. I had initially a list of 8 characters but narrowed it down to 5 in favour of those with more prominent exhibiting of evolving design pertaining to narrative development.
Below is the initial draft of my plans:
Feedback:
No class this week due to public holiday. We are needed to update on our progress via our respective mediums.
Week 9
After updating from last week, this week Dr. Hayati advised me to adjusts my interview questions as well as to start thinking of who to interview, to which I explained that there was group of industry folk that I had a contact with that I could interview. For that matter, I was also told to be cautious of my questions if I was going to do a focus group style interview as too specific or specialised questions might leave those not explicitly involved in the field to be unable to provide proper responses.
With this in mind, I went about updating my questions as well as making a separate set of similar yet crowd friendly questions. Below is the updated version of my plan.
With that done, I also got down to hooking up with the group that I intended to interview by meeting up with them once before to get to know them as well as observe the environment to plan my execution.
Feedback:
I should try to narrow my interview to people who specialise in the medium I am investigating for better results. Care must also be taken to ensure the interview questions are not too specific for a group interview so it can be applied to the whole group.
Week 10
No class this week due to Hari Raya. After meeting up with the group and some consideration later, I decided to alter my plan take a more survey style approach. Adjusting my questions for a more easier distribution due to deciding that environment did not really lend itself to a interview as well as there being an agenda every week, making it hard for me to slide in my interview plans.
Hence, I adapted the questions into a questionnaire to be circulated among the chat group. This also allowed me to be able to more conveniently circulated amongst other people and groups that may fit the target audience.

Alongside that I have also begone doing my documentation on the visual analysis for the characters I have chosen. Below are the listed characters:
A2 (NieR: Automata)
Filo (The Rising of the Shield Hero)
Kratos (God of War series)
Lara Croft (Tomb Raider 2013)
Simone (NieR: Automata)
Below is the summary of the characters and the details dissected:
This week was a public holiday. We were to work on getting the data we needed be it responses or material.
Week 11
This week I updated Dr. Hayati on my progress and change of plans. She approved of my decision to adjust methods but told me to do my best to try do some interviews if possible. She also told me to since I was doing a survey and also since I was finding trouble getting the group to respond to the survey, I could also do one for the more general audience so that I can also get some quantitative data for both statistics as well as backing up the visual analysis.
Below is the updated execution plan:
After making a more simplified version of questions, I also added a comparison section where the participants would rate how much they think a character has gone through based on a before after appearance comparison.

Updated Visual analysis including data collected from survey in graph form:
After all of this was done we had to compile our data together for submission. Below is the slides containing the data collected as well as the impressions given:
Feedback:
My questions, while informative and suitable in making a questionnaire for practitioners, lacks room for getting statistical data. I should maintain the current questionnaire as more of an in depth interview and create a traditional style survey that can be answered by the general public.
