Lectures

Lecture 1: Introduction / Research Problem
03 April 2019 | Week 1

The first class begins with a rundown of the overall subject module booklet, enlightening us on what we can expect in the duration of the semester. We were also given a basic understanding on research, the process of questioning, discovery and investigation and the arrival at potential new conclusions.

Lecture 2: Problem statement, Research question, Research objective
10 April 2019 | Week 2

Week 2 has us further learning the structures of a good research, more specifically the structure of a proposal, of which we will be applying to our own proposal for our research assignment.

Ms Jinchi gave us a rundown on the module as well as gave us a briefing as to what we would be doing. Namely, preparing the proposal for our research. We were to decide on a field of interest optimally relating to our desired specialisation. Then we were to read up on the field and try to find potential problems or topics we could research.

Below was my first attempt at an idea.

10 April 2019 | Week 2

We were taught more extensively on the elements of a research proposal this week. Learning more about problem statement, research question and research objective. After some consideration, I found my initial topic felt far too subjective and lacked a potential solid conclusion. Thus, I decided to rethink the plan and create a new idea.

Below is the slides for the proposal draft with the new idea.

Feedback:

Research subject is, while an interesting study, a bit too advanced for the level of study. Requires too much time, resources and tools to properly achieve. Try watering down to a more achievable state.

17 April 2019 | Week 3

After feedback from Dr Noorhayati from the previous week, I revised the initial idea to a more realistic topic. Mainly the curiosity that is imperfections in character designs and how they impact character appeal.

Feedback:

Topic area is diluted and general, need to single out one specific area. Choice of words as well as research objectives can revised to be more clear. Consideration should also be taken as to how the research will impact future endeavours.

24 April 2019 | Week 4

It is the day of submission, and I had one more session of consultation with Dr Noorhayati. She gave some last bit of advice and critique for me to apply to the slides before submission.

After the submission, I was still unsatisfied with the wording of my proposal. I decided to take some extra time to refine and revise the slides for the sake of the later projects. I also decided to adjust the scope of my research from the flaws in characters to narrative development via the use of evolving character design.

Below is the revised version.

Feedback:

More consideration needed for what the ultimate goal or outcome of the research is. Consider also whether if problem statement is an personal assumption or a widely discussed question.
